The proverbial concept drawing on the back of a cocktail knapkin is often the opening move in the time-consuming and expensive process of bringing an idea from creative inspiration to concrete reality. Then, a more illustrative hand sketch gives the concept form and material definition. The next step in conceptual expression is typically a photorealistic rendering, delivered after months of design effort and associated cost. But, there is a faster, cheaper way to represent a project concept in three-dimensional form; complete with accurate shadow modeling, implied materiality, and the ability to generate quick plans and elevations.
Using a combination of 2D CAD drawing, hand sketching, and SketchUp software, convincing exterior facades and three-dimensional spatial studies can be delivered at low cost and rapid turnaround.
The four projects shown at right were completed by one designer in less than two weeks studio time each, including site and context considerations, and schematic design. These highly resolved digital sketches are ideal for design development presentations, massing and context studies, shadow analysis, and stakeholder buy-in.
